Nairobi

Nairobi, with its roughly 2.8 million inhabitants, is the largest city in Kenya and also the country’s capital. It is hard to believe that this metropolis was founded as recently as the beginning of the 20th century. At that time, it was a tiny base along the railway line from Mombasa to Uganda. The Masai called it „Enkare Nyirobi“, meaning „place of cool waters“. The name later became “Nairobi”.
Due to the city’s location at 1’624 m above sea level, the climate in Nairobi is quite pleasant for Europeans: it is rarely excessively hot and, occasionally, it can get quite fresh at night. Many travellers use Nairobi as the entry point for various safari destinations. This is where most of the safari operators are located, and from where they transport guests either via land or chartered plane from Wilson Airport to the national parks. Even travellers who are in Nairobi only briefly - for instance on a business trip or conference - have plenty of opportunities for unforgettable Safari experiences: the Nairobi National Park is located just beyond the southern border of the city. As well as elephants, practically all of the known savannah animals of Kenya can be seen in the wild – and within eyeshot of the skyscrapers of a modern metropolis.
Guests who wish to see animals up close are recommended to visit the giraffe centre or the elephant orphanage. A further attraction that should not be missed is the national museum which is known for its paleo-anthropological department where important artefacts from early human history are displayed.
Nairobi is also known for its lively nightlife: there are plenty of discotheques and clubs for night owls. Furthermore, the restaurant scene in Nairobi has developed considerably in recent years. In a nutshell, Nairobi is far more than a safari stopover, offering a host of opportunities to discover modern African urban life!
